Why I like Sunday morning is I can sleep as much as I want. No need to get up in the early hours of the day and indulge in usual morning chorus. There are no deadlines to meet, no meeting to be conducted, no project to be implemented. I can pull the blanket over my head and spent more time in the bed while the rays of morning Sun forces its entry over the little gap of my bedroom window.
But last Sunday was different. I had to attend a family invitation for lunch in Bandra. It takes minimum one hour plus the traffic block to reach the destination from my place. As usual we started late and reached there much later than expected.
Our hostess, who is a distance relative of my wife, was there at the doorstep to receive us. It was a well-designed, beautifully-decorated, systematically-furnished house. We are first greeted with some drinks, Vodka for me orange juice for rest of my family.
We sat down and got into conversation. Though she is a distance relative of my wife, it is my first encounter with her. So there needs a little bit of self introductions from both sides to understand each other.
She practices Theta Healing. It is a technique that focuses on thought and prayer. Theta Healing teaches how to put to use our natural intuition, relying upon unconditional love of ‘Creator of All That’ is to do the actual work. It can also be termed as a spiritual healing technique which is done by reprogramming the subconscious mind. We talked extensively about Theta Healing and I must admit it was very informative.
As our conversation progressed she asked me what I was doing.
“I am in to ERP software solution,” I said with a smile on my face assuming that she may not know what I am talking about.
“Oh, I see,” she said and continued “I just read a report about cloud computing.”
It made me think that she also a follower of the latest happenings in the technology world. “This is good sign that you follow what is happening in the information technology”, I said.
“World and technology is gradually going to get transformed in cloud”, she said and continued the whole subject of cloud computing in her own version. She continued to talk like someone who could foresee the future developments in technology front. “I knew this would happen one day. All these technology would be powered by angels in the cloud”. She also made a description on cloud computing which was thought-provoking She said “Cloud is where Creator would connect everything to the angels”.
For a moment I have been transported into another world. My imaginations went wild. I have started dreaming the computers that are being guarded by angels floating in the air playing a hide and seek game with clouds in the sky.
On coming back to my conscious mind, I tried to convince her, “No, No. Cloud is not about angels and creator, Cloud computing is a new phenomenon. Cloud computing lets you use your files and application over the internet.”
“Hmmm … sounds interesting” she said and asked, “tell me how does it work in your ERP product?”
I said, “eresource is a web based ERP solution. Web based means, it also work on Internet. The ERP is hosted on a remote server. There is absolutely nothing on a local computer. It minimizes the need for storage capacity and also allows information to be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection and browser.”
“That is great, but I am a bit confused,” she said. “Are you trying to say we don’t I need a computer to run the eresource Cloud ERP?,” she enquired
“There’s a good chance you’ve already used some form of cloud computing. If you have an e-mail account with a Web-based e-mail service like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, then you’ve had some experience with cloud computing. Instead of running an e-mail program on your computer, you log in to an Internet e-mail account remotely. The software and storage for your account doesn’t exist on your computer — it’s on the service’s computer cloud. Given that, you still need a computer to connect to the Internet and access your emails, right? That is exactly how the ERP on Cloud works.
“Ok”,she said and asked, “who does the maintenance of eresource ERP on the cloud”.
“Maintenance of the server and software is the responsibility of the hosting service provider.” I said.
“It sounds great and looks there is no need of having a full day System Administrator or there is no need of IT department as well,” she said.
“Absolutely right,” I said..
“Is this Cloud ERP stuff is cheaper, better and faster?”, she enquired
“Yes, of course,” I said, “Cloud ERP is much cheaper, much faster and better.”
“Surely, the technology you deployed has a great backing. Though it may look new for your industry, we started working from the cloud powered by the angels since the beginning,” she explained..
Without imparting much more information, I said, “yes we both work on same technology but for different reasons,” and headed to the lunch table.
